START WITH A REGION
The west, centre and east are different trips.
Chania gives you a beautiful old harbour and access to the island's wild western beaches. Heraklion pairs city energy with the Minoan past. Rethymno is a graceful middle ground, while the east feels more open and unhurried.
Trying to cover all of Crete in a few days creates a lot of driving. One well-chosen base is usually the more memorable choice.

Meet the Minoan past in the morning
Visit Knossos early, before the heat and crowds build. Give yourself an unhurried afternoon afterwards rather than trying to squeeze history into a transfer day.

Make a western beach a full day
Balos, Falassarna and Elafonissi reward an early start. Their routes, water and changing light deserve more than a quick stop.

Eat where the route ends
A village taverna after a drive through the hills is one of Crete's simplest pleasures. Order slowly, ask what is local and leave room for a final glass of raki.

A car is not a luxury here; it is the key to the island.
Keep the route generous.
Mountain roads and coastal detours take time. Choose fewer stops and arrive with enough daylight to enjoy them.
Shoulder months are especially kind.
Late spring and early autumn make the roads, walks and beaches feel easier without losing the Cretan sun.
Split the island only when it helps.
For a longer trip, a west-and-centre split is more useful than changing hotels every other night.
