CYCLADES · GREECE
Not just a sunset. A landscape shaped by fire, sea and slow dinners.
Santorini is the Cyclades at its most dramatic: villages balanced on the rim of a flooded volcanic crater, black-sand shores below, and evenings that seem made for lingering. Stay on the caldera for the view, head south for space and beach days, or split your time between both.

Villages on the edge of an ancient craterA LANDSCAPE IN LAYERS
White villages above. Volcanic shores below.
Santorini rewards travellers who move between its different faces. Spend an early morning high on the caldera, then make your way down to a black-sand beach, a small harbour or a vineyard on the quieter inland side.
That contrast is the real luxury of the island: you can have the famous view, without making it the whole trip.
Morning
Walk the cliff path before the island wakes up.
Afternoon
Trade the caldera for volcanic water and a long lunch.
WHERE TO STAY
Choose your side of Santorini.
There is no single “best” base. Pick the part of the island that fits the holiday you actually want.
Oia
For iconic views, design-led stays and unhurried romantic evenings. Beautiful, sought-after and at its liveliest around sunset.

Caldera drama with a calmer feel. A smart choice for walkers who want easy access to Fira without staying in its busiest pocket.
Choose it for: quiet views and long walksFira
The island’s energetic centre, with restaurants, shops, transport links and a caldera backdrop. Best when you want the island at your doorstep.

For beach time, more room and a more relaxed budget. These east-coast bases trade cliffside views for black-sand beaches and an easier pace.

Three Santorini moments worth planning around.
- 01
Walk the caldera path
Set aside a morning for the coastal route linking Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia. Start early, carry water and let the changing angle of the crater do the rest.
- 02
See the volcanic side
Pair a boat trip around Nea Kameni and the hot springs with a swim or sunset from the water. It is the quickest way to understand why this island looks unlike any other.
- 03
Go beyond the white villages
Make time for Akrotiri’s archaeological site, a vineyard lunch, and the red, white or black volcanic beaches along the south and east coasts.
WHEN TO GO
Match the month to your mood.
April–May
Green hillsides, pleasant walking weather and a gentler rhythm before high season.
June–September
Sea-swimming weather, late dinners and the island at its most vivid. Book well ahead.
October
Warm water, softer light and fewer crowds: a favourite window for a slower stay.
PLAN IT WELL
A better Santorini trip is about timing, not ticking boxes.
Leave a little room on day one.
Whether you arrive by ferry at Athinios or fly into Thira, the transfer to your hotel can take longer than the map suggests in high season. Book the first sunset near where you are staying rather than trying to cross the island immediately.
Choose your transport to match your base.
Fira makes buses and taxi connections easier. A car gives more freedom for Akrotiri, the beaches and inland villages, but narrow roads and limited parking mean early starts are worth it.
Spend where it changes the experience.
A caldera-view room can be memorable for a special night; a beach-side or inland base can make the rest of the trip more relaxed. Splitting your stay is often the most balanced option.
